Meet Cherise
I am running for State Representative in House District 26 because I still see challenges being faced by individuals that I faced decades ago. I want to broaden my ability to help others as so many of you helped me and I hope to have your support on June 7th.
With over 12 years of being an ACTIVE community member, I’ve decided my next step is to embark on this journey to the State Capitol so I can serve you in a different capacity.
As a young mom, I earned my GED so I could provide a better life for my children. My hope was to get a higher paying job that offered paid-time-off and medical insurance.
I have always been concerned about our community and supported our leaders to affect real change. I was a young mom trying to build a better community for my family and neighbors. This allowed me to grow as a professional and advocate in House District 26.
I was inspired to reestablish my neighborhood association, Route 66 West. As President since 2014, we’ve accomplished several of our goals. Additionally, I’ve served on the Executive Board on the Southwest Alliance of Neighbors (SWAN), since 2010.
My husband Steven and I are proud to have raised our children on the Southwest Mesa. I am acutely aware of the adversities our children sometimes face in the classroom. Because of the adversities I experienced with my own education, I became a “room mom” and served as the founding Secretary on the PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization), where I helped develop the blueprint for the PTSO’s operating practices and annual fundraisers that continue to be utilized today. I did what I could to help raise money for the classrooms and stay involved to ensure my children thrived in education. They ultimately graduated and have since moved on to higher education.
I still remain active in our community and currently serve on the City of Albuquerque’s Redistricting Committee on behalf of District 3 and am a member of the Arts Board subcommittee through Bernalillo County on behalf of House District 26.
I will bring a unique perspective to the table with my background in city government, knowledge of the legislative process and my work with non-profits. I understand firsthand the barriers young families face and I want to help bring more opportunities to our community. As your State Representative, I will continue to serve with the same passion that I've dedicated to my community for the past 12 years.
